American liberalism has it’s seeds sowed within several political parties, including the Democratic party. Progressives, Socialists, Green Party, Communist, and others are dominated by liberals, each with an agenda. I would suggest that American liberalism would be more aptly called Self-Interest-ism. As this relates to the Democratic Party, the Democrats have become a coalition of various self-interest groups.
The low income folks seek more governmental programs to assist them. Entitlements are their interests. Environmentalists seek more legislation to protect mother nature from man’s exploitation. Racial minorities seek remedies for past disadvantages of their heritage, and homosexuals seek equality in tradition-bound mainstream America. The list of those with self-interests is endless, and most consider themselves to be Democrats.
While I respect anyone’s desire to improve their personal situation, I do not think that most of these self interested people ever consider the greater good of our country. The greatness of the United States of America can be attributed to ideals set forth in our Constitution. Our country’s orientation is traditional, not liberal.
According to my Webster’s, liberals are defined as being tolerant of others opinions, broad-minded. I find liberals to be the least tolerant of other’s ideas of all groups, which is a contradiction. It seems to me that the basic problem for the Democratic Party is it’s lack of any unified purpose. It is impossible to create any party platform for such a variety of self interests.
If America is to survive as a healthy, vibrant entity in the Free World, the greater interests of our country will have to survive the attacks to the traditions upon which America was founded. As long as all Americans are guaranteed their right to the pursuit of happiness free from discrimination, our reasonable self-interests are well protected. Democrats, and liberals need to do some deep introspection of themselves, and their appropriate function as Americans.
