Lip Augmentation is performed to increase the size of one’s lips. It can be done in a variety of ways, ranging from fat and collagen injection, which are short-lived, to lip implants which are longer lasting, and in some cases even permanent, try one.
What is the difference between Collagen, Restylane, Alloderm, Gore-tex & fat injection?
Collagen is a protein found in the skin of all mammals. Injectable collagen (brand names are Zyderm and Zyplast) comes in two types. The first type is human collagen which is grown in a test tube from human cells. It lasts the longest and does not require a test injection before use. The other type of collagen is derived from purified bovine (cow) collagen. Collagen injections are used to replace the collagen you lose naturally as you age. In lips, Collagen puffs up the tissue making lip wrinkles disappear and makes the lips fuller and more lush. Collagen is not a permanent solution- it lasts up to six months.
Alloderm consists of dermis, the most durable part of skin. It’s derived from human skin and is inserted through tiny incisions located inside each corner of the mouth. Lips can maintain their increased size with Alloderm for over one year, making this an excellent treatment choice. Alloderm is inserted under local anesthetic and requires about 30 minutes. Swelling lasts for 1 week and firmness lasts for several weeks.
Restylane and Perlane are the brand names of hyaluronic acid, a normal part of human skin. They do not come from an animal source and therefore do not require a test injection before use. Once injected into the lip, they may last up to 12 months. Restylane and Perlane are now approved for use in the United States but have been used safely and successfully in Europe and North America for years.
Gore-tex, a synthetic implant, can also be used. It looks like a fine strand of spaghetti and is used to enhance the size of the lips. Although permanent, it may feel a bit firm.
To plump out the lips, fat injection is being used and also the furrows whether the both side of the upper lip. This injection will last for up to 6 months in a row and some additional injections will allow patients to achieve a result that will probably lasts for up to several years.
Fat injections are performed under local anesthesia, and involve removing fat from one area—such as your outer thigh—and injecting it into the area you want to modify. Fat removed with liposuction can also be used. Fat injections may result in some swelling and bruising, but discomfort is minimal for a total makeover. Normal activities can be resumed within several days. You will likely feel tired and sore for 1-2 weeks following this procedure. Medication can be used to control any pain you experience. You can expect bruising and swelling. You usually can return to work in about 2 weeks and can start exercising again in 4-6 weeks, but lips can maintain their increased size with Alloderm for over one year, making this an excellent treatment choice.
